Because heaven forbid that we should focus on the important things

  1. What is this a reference to? I recall that there was some uproar when there was a guy with a really bad shirt. I also don't get what's wrong with dressing up neatly for a press release.

    1. You are correct, it is a reference to a recent similar event (the landing of a probe on comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko) by the European Space Agency. One of the scientists involved, a colorful character, was wearing an anime-inspired shirt during a press conference, and someone took great offense at what was perceived as sexist imagery. The poor guy was hounded for several days in the press and on the web and had to actually apologize in public for wearing his shirt. Nothing wrong with dressing neatly, mind you, but the reaction was totally out of proportion to the perceived offense... and was downright ridiculous when compared to what had been accomplished: landing a robot on a comet!
